Weston’s Local and Global Discussion Group’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 2 from 1:15 to around 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Weston Public Library. We are delighted to welcome back Bernie Shuster, who earlier this year gave a presentation on Elon Musk. This time, Bernie turns his attention to great American trials.
He will cover trials involving Patricia Hearst, Leo Frank, Lizzie Borden, Bernhard Goetz, O.J. Simpson, and Sam Sheppard. By a careful study of the background stories related to the alleged offenses, contemporary news articles, supportive media and informative writings, we will discuss some of the most famous American court trials. The supportive materials as well as the trial participants’ testimony will cast a bright light at not only milestones in American legal history, but at our own past, our own political beliefs, and our own culture. The participants will take part as judge, jury, and opposing counsel in each case. The primary focus of each trial is — was justice achieved?
This promises to be a lively event, and anyone who wishes to discuss the issues in civil discourse with a wide variety of participants, is invited to attend.
Discussion leader Bernie Shuster received a BA degree in history from UMass Amherst and an LLD from Boston University. He practiced law in a Boston firm and left to found and serve as COO of a financial services company. Bernie has led many courses at Lifelong Learning at Harvard, Regis, and BOLLI at Brandeis.
The meeting will be hybrid, both in person and via Zoom. The Zoom link is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81849707570.
