SUMMARY:A Tribute to Weston Artist and Fire Fighter Jack Richardson
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 10 from 7-9 pm at the Josiah Smith
Tavern Rose Ballroom\, please join the Weston Historical Society for an
exhibition of watercolors by Jack Richardson as well as conversation with
Jack’s daughter\, Dawn. There will be a silent auction of three original
 watercolors.\n\nJohn H. “Jack” Richardson (1938 – 2017) came from a
family of artists and grew up loving to draw. A long-time Weston resident\,
Richardson served more than 20 years as a firefighter\, retiring as a
captain. He designed the graphics for Weston Fire Department equipment and
was said to be “well-known among firefighters in New England for his
hand-painted gold leaf truck lettering.”\n\nIn addition to working as a
firefighter and sign painter\, Richardson was a talented watercolorist.
With his teacher\, Ray Doyle\, he established a weekly watercolor night in
the studio in his garage at 2 Warren Lane. Richardson accepted commissions
for house paintings and painted many Weston town buildings and seasonal
events such as his iconic Weston High School graduation and winter sledding
on the Town Green.\n\nParking is available at the JST car pasture (the
parking lot near former Tavernside playground). Beer and wine will be
available for purchase. The Rose Ballroom is limited to 49 attendees due to
 fire department regulations.

SUMMARY:Second Sunday Open House and Tours
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Golden Ball Tavern Museum for our Open House Tours
from 1-3 pm. Sunday\, November 10th. Free and family friendly! Join us to
learn more about colonial life and see what it was like to live in the 18th
and 19th century first hand.\n\nHere history still lives and breathes\,
telling the story of change through time. Come and explore this unique
Revolutionary era tavern and learn of spies who visited the tavern and
played a pivotal role in the revolution\, the Weston tea party\, and the
eventful visit of Paul Revere's men.\n\nYou will also learn about six
generations of the Jones family who lived in this house for 200
years.\n\nThe Golden Ball Tavern was established and operated by prominent
Weston resident\, Isaac Jones. Isaac was a Loyalist turned Patriot and
faced a dilemma not unlike those we face today. The tavern "at the sign of
the Golden Ball" operated as an inn from 1770 to 1793 and played a pivotal
role in the unfolding of the Revolutionary War when it served as a base for
British spies. The house and Tavern were later occupied and carefully
preserved for 200 years by six generations of the Jones family.\n\nThe
Golden Ball Tavern is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
 and is entirely self-sustaining.

SUMMARY:Local Global Discussion Group: Local Issues Facing Weston
DESCRIPTION:The November 12th meeting of the Local and Global Discussion
Group will be devoted to local issues in anticipation of Town Meeting in
December.\nAt Town Meeting on December 3rd a proposed bylaw will be
discussed. It is an effort to loosen restrictions on “Accessory Dwelling
Units” (ADUs). Why was the “Affordable Homes Act” enacted by the
State Legislature? What is Weston’s response to the requirements? What
does (or doesn’t) the ADU law have to do with the 40B and MBTA 3A? What
is Weston doing to provide more options for senior housing the area?
Imaikalani Aiu\, the Weston Town Planner\, and representatives of the
housing committee will be available to answer questions.\nSecond\, we will
hear from the Town Governance Study Committee. This committee has been
studying the organization and decision-making roles of the numerous
committees and departments in Weston.\nThird\, Laurie Bent\, a member of
the Weston Select Board and the Unified Planning Committee\, will cover the
current status of the Unified Plan: Why does Weston need one and what will
it cover?\nFinally\, time permitting\, we will also have an update on the
efforts to “Connect Weston” with a new community calendar and community
newspaper.\nThe meeting is open to all who wish to discuss the issues in
civil discourse with a wide variety of participants. It will be chaired by
Joel Angiolillo and will be held from 1:00 to 2:30 on Tuesday\, November
12th at the Weston Public Library’s Community Room.  If you cannot
attend in person\, please contact Susan Wagner susanwgnr@gmail.com for the

SUMMARY:Forests for Our Future
DESCRIPTION:Forests for Our Future: The Role of Massachusetts Forests in
Combating Climate Change\n\nMassachusetts is unique in being both among the
most populated and most forested states. Our residents look to forests for
so much: from wood to water\, from walking trails to wildlife. Recently\,
we added climate stabilization to the list. Massachusetts is now
legislatively committed to reaching “Net Zero” greenhouse gas emissions
by 2050. Forests are expected to put the “Net” into this “Net Zero”
goal. According to the legislation\, forest carbon sequestration (sometimes
called "negative emissions”) can be counted to offset up to 15% of the
emissions reduction goal. Is this a good idea? Is it even possible? How can
we influence forests’ ability to sequester and store carbon?\n\nOur
speaker\, Dr. Jonathan Thompson\, is a Senior Ecologist and Research
Director at the Harvard Forest\, Harvard’s 4\,000-acre laboratory and
classroom for ecological research. His research focuses on long-term and
broad-scale changes in forest ecosystems\, with an emphasis on quantifying
how land use – including harvest\, conversion\, and land protection –
affects forest ecosystem processes and services. He is the Principal
Investigator for the Harvard Forest Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER)
program\, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and involving more
than 100 scientists and students investigating the dynamics of the New
England landscape. Dr. Thompson holds a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology and an M.S.
in Forest Policy from Oregon State University.\n\nThis free event will be
offered in person at First Parish in Lincoln (4 Bedford Road) and on Zoom.
You can register for the webinar at MetroWest Climate Solutions.
