SUMMARY:Trains on Stamps Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Spellman Postal Museum Opens ‘Trains on Stamps’
Exhibit\n\nWeston\, MA – Stamp collectors and train buffs alike will
enjoy a new exhibit at the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal
History.\n\nFeaturing stamps from the museum’s vast collection\, the
Trains on Stamps exhibit portrays the worldwide history of commemorative
stamps depicting trains and railways.\n\nStarting with the first U.S. train
stamp in 1869\, the exhibit displays stamps honoring steam locomotives\,
streamlined passenger trains\, the first transcontinental railroad\, and
many more. International stamps commemorate the World War 1 armistice
signed in a French railway car\, the famed Flying Scotsman steam
locomotive\, as well as the Orient Express luxury passenger
train\n\n“Evoking the spirit of adventure\, trains have long been a
favorite topic for commemorative stamps\,” said exhibit curator Stephen
Brayton. “For this exhibit we researched postal and railroad history
going back two centuries\,.”\n\nThe only U.S. stamp museum outside of the
Smithsonian Institution\, the Spellman features philatelic exhibits on
topics ranging from the Boston Tea Party to the 1937 Hindenburg disaster\,
from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to breast cancer awareness.
Local residents will also find displays on postal history in Weston\,
including the Boston Post Road.\n\nThe Spellman Museum is a private\,
non-profit educational institution located on the Regis College campus in
Weston\, MA. Besides exhibit galleries\, it features a philatelic library
and a retail store stocked with stamps\, collecting supplies\, books\, and
 souvenirs.\n\nContact: Brian Howard  781-768-8367.
