When the character actor Charles Dance decided direct his first film, having come across a short story about two unmarried sisters living in 1930s Cornwall, he immediately thought of casting Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Having all worked together for years, Smith and Dench both signed on without even reading the script.
The story of the film is deceptively simple. Janet and Ursula are two aging sisters who live a contented life in a fine house overlooking the ocean. One morning after a storm, they find Andrea, a young Polish man who has washed ashore. The sisters take him into their home. As they nurse him back to health and teach him English, they start to feel a range of conflicting emotions. Soon Andrea is up an about, and his musical talent attracts the attention of a lithesome Russian painter on holiday from London. With a new war on the horizon, the presence of foreigners stirs the suspicions of the local community. But Janet and Ursula, who both lost loves in the First World War, are loathe to let Andrea go—even when a life-changing opportunity is offered to him.
